From Puppies to Professionals: Harnessing the Strength of Positive Reinforcement

My life currently revolves around a 4-month-old puppy. She's a sweet little mush, but also a crazy demon. I wasn't fully prepared for what having a puppy entails, but let's just say, I'm learning a lot! One of the biggest things I'm working on is patience and changing my mindset to focus on positive reinforcement. I'm starting to realize that this can apply to so many different areas, including relationships, and even people management!

As a business owner and people leader, a positive approach could be extremely beneficial. Now, of course, situations may arise where this wouldn't be the best approach, but by training your environment in a positive way, it will not only help your team excel but can also build a culture of positivity and trust.

What are some ways to do this? I’m so glad you asked!

1. Support your people: Provide them a space for open dialogue to not only share challenges, but discuss what’s working, future goals, and learning opportunities. When having one-on-one conversations with your team members, it's important not only to point out what they need to work on but also what they're really doing well and how that can apply to other areas of their work.

2. Leverage Strengths: Play on people's strengths. If you have someone who is very strong operationally, where can you utilize them in your business, even if that may not be their main job? Are there additional tasks they can take on that could remove the burden from you or another team member? Even if you're not able to create a full-time role completely dedicated to those strengths, chances are you may be able to use pieces of that in other areas of your business.

3. Motivation Matters: Figure out how people are motivated, whether it's praise, recognition, financially, or increased responsibility. Use it to your advantage. Everyone is motivated differently, and by figuring this out for each individual on your team, you can tailor your approach. For instance, providing structure, guidance, and encouragement can be a powerful motivator for those seeking career growth.

4. Trust Breeds Growth: Trust plays a large part in growth, autonomy, and job satisfaction. Grant employees more ownership and autonomy over their tasks, projects, and where and how they work. This allows them to take pride in their work and have a sense of ownership over their career. The more invested they are in their career, the more invested they are in your team.

Of course, not everything is butterflies and rainbows. When starting the conversation around performance slipping, positive and constructive feedback are essential to highlight what employees are doing well and provide guidance on areas for improvement. It's important to balance the positive and negative and focus on behavior, not the person.
